John was born on 11 Aug, 1846 in East Holywell in Holywell, Northumberland, Englanda1, the son of Matthew Hall (1821–1892)★, a collier, and Mary Miller (1825–1878)★. He was baptised as an infant on 28 Oct, 1846 at St. Alban's Church in Earsdon, Northumberland, Englandb1. He is Ian's great great grandfather.

John was recorded in the 1851 census in Hartley in Northumberland, Englandc1 with his father Matthew, now a coal miner, mother Mary and two siblings George and Matthew.

By the time of the 1861 census he was living in Bebside in Cowpen, Horton, Northumberland, Englandd1 with his father Matthew, mother Mary and four siblings George, a coal miner, Matthew, a coal miner, James and William.

He married Elizabeth Emma Carr (1849–1907)★ on 23 Dec, 1867 at St. Alban's Church, Earsdona2,e1 . They went on to have six children:–

John was recorded in the 1901 census at 231 Fourth Row in Ashington, Bothal Demesne, Northumberland, Englandq1 with his wife Elizabeth Emma and three children James William, George Wilson, a coal hewer and Margaret Robertson.

John died at the age of fifty-five on 5 Apr, 1902 in Ashingtona8. His death was attributed to "capillary bronchitis"a8.

He was survived by his wife Elizabeth Emma.
