George spent the years 1924 to 1937 abroad, first in the Bahamas and Jamaica and then in India. While he was in India he married a Eurasian woman - Maud - who claimed to be Scottish. In 1937 he was posted to England for a few months (that was when mum and I met Maud). Maud didn't visit her supposed Scottish relations though. George and Maud then returned to India. When war seemed imminent in 1939 George was again posted to England, this time to train recruits at Caterham, and later to train the Home Guard in Kent. On this occasion Maud did not accompany him. I think that after George had met Dorothy he was unable to get a divorce from Maud either because she refused him one or because she couldn't be contacted.
