John was born on 1 May, 1775 in the parish of Adstone in Northamptonshire, Englanda1, the son of William Bates (?–1778)★ and Elizabeth Banbury (?–1806)★. He was baptised as an infant on 4 Jun, 1775 in Adstonea1. He is Stephanie's 4x great grandfather.

He married Mary Talbot★ on 5 Nov, 1798 at St. Mary's Church in Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire, Englandb1 . They had six children:–

He met Mary Labrum (1795–?) before 1837 and went on to have three daughters with her:–

  • Elizabeth Digby baptised on 30 Jun, 1837 in Adstonea2. Probably died in 1898 at the age of sixty-one.
  • Mary probably born in 1838 in Northamptonshire in England.
  • Sarah baptised on 11 Mar, 1838 in Adstonea3.

In the 1851 census he was living in Adstonee1 with his daughter Sarah and children's mother Mary Labrum.

John died at the age of eighty in 1855 in Adstone and was buried on 5 Mar, 1855 at All Saints Church in Adstone, Northamptonshire, Englanda4
