Research Notes
Which George Tew? #
There are two George Tews baptised in Shalstone 1825. It took a while but we managed to sort out which beloinged to which family
We knew that our George’s father was called Thomas. It’s on his marriage certificate to Caroline Whitehead, 1858. His age is shown as 34, suggesting a birth year of 1824. They married in Shalstone.
In the 1841 census there is a George, aged 15 (which could be 15-19) living with a Thomas, age 35, and Ann, age 30, in Wood Green, near Shalstone. Plus younger siblings Anna (10), Eliza (7), Robert (4), Abel (2).
The other George Tew is on the same page, aged 15 (i.e. 15-19), living with a George, age 55, and Ann, aged 45, in Old Wick, near Shalstone. Younger siblings Stephen (12), James (10), Martha (8), Abraham (6).
Thomas Tew married Lydia Fetters or Fletcher in 1824 in Shalstone. We have seen this previously and confirmed in on our visit to the archive yesterday. A witness on this marriage was William May and there is a William May of the same age as Thomas living next door to him in 1841
Lydia Tew (Fetters) was buried in Shalston on 10 Nov 1826, abode Shalstone, age 22.
Thomas Tew then married Ann Turvey on 28 Jan 1830, in Whitfield, Northamptonshire. We have an image of this from ancestry. He was of Shalstone, she was of Whitfield. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Tew. Thomas had a younger sister Elizabeth, born 1805.
On 1 Apr 2023 we recorded a baptism in Shalstone of George Tew on 22 May 1825. Son of George and Ann Tew, abode The Den or Oldwick extra parochial place. George, the father, was a dairy man. However the entry has been written over a baptism with parents Thomas and Lydia, and date 27 Feb. The rector, has written in the margin: “May 22, No 77. A mistake was made of the time of Entry within the date & the names of parents.”. We took a photocopy of this page.
Back in 2021, I am sure we had seen a transcript the baptism of George, son of Thomas and Lydia on findmypast. But we did not take a screenshot like we normally do. But this information is not on findmypast any more. We think it has been “corrected” following the curate’s notes on the mistake.
We have recorded baptism records of Thomas and Ann’s children from 1830 onward: Hannah (1830), Eliza (1833), Robert (1836) and others.
There are no baptisms of a Tew with a father Thomas before 1830.
Our George Tew married Mary Quinny in 1849, in Wormleighton, Warwickshire. We have an image of the banns for this marriage which states that both George and Mary were of the extra-parochial place called Watergall, adjoining the parish of Wormleighton. We don’t know why George was in Warwickshire.
In the 1851 census, George Tew is in Water Stratford, alone, married, age 26. It states he was born in Shalstone. In the same census, Mary Tew (Quinny) is with her father Richard in Mollington, Oxfordshire. Her daughter Emma was aged 10m, born in Shalstone. Mollington is five miles from Wormleighton.
Mary Quinny died in 1857. Our George Tew married Caroline/Kitty Whitehead the next year in 1858
The other George Tew married Elizabeth Ann Sadler in 1859.
The other George Tew was a carpenter whereas ours was a horseman or agricultural labourer.
This is how the two George’s are probably related:
