Family History

We’ve been thinking more about how Joseph Ximenes travelled to Risca. We think he may have travelled from a Portugese territory (such as the Azores and Cape Verde) or the Americas.

Cape Verde, in particular, is interesting because of DNA links and the connection between the South Wales coal fields and the refuelling station that the British maintained there.

I found some newspaper reports that showed shipping movements for Newport and extracted all the ships that were travelling to the interesting destinations.

The newpaper references were:

  • The Monmouthshire Merlin, No 2224, 21 Jul 1871, Page 5, Col 4, Newport Shipping Intelligence
  • The Monmouthshire Merlin Supplement, 5 May 1871, Page 7, Col 6, Newport Shipping Intelligence
