I found a newspaper report of a pitman falling into the quarry at Billy Mill which I think must refer to John Richardson:

On Saturday night, a pitman belonging to Monkseaton, who had spend the day in an alehouse at Billy Mill, set out late in the evening in order to go home but, being much intoxicated, took a contrary road and unfortunately fell into Billy Mill Quarry and was killed.¹
