ALCOCK
Overnight another certificate arrived, the birth of Henry Alcock and Mary Sharpe’s daughter Susannah. We wanted to be sure that Henry was her father since our first reference to her was in the 1871 census where Henry has disappeared.
Birth at Hill Side, Lenton, Nottinghamshire on 6 April 1866 of Susannah Eliza, daughter of Henry Alcock and Millicent Mary Alcock, formerly Sharp. Henry was a Maltster Journeyman. The informant was Millicent Mary Alcock [Sharpe is crossed out and initialled], mother, Hill Side, Lenton. Registered on 24 April 1866.
This is a very interesting certificate in a number of ways. Firstly it gives the mother’s name as Millicent Mary whereas we have only known her as Mary in the census and Mary Millicent on her death certificate. Knowing this information helped me find a possible baptism for her:
Baptism at St Marylebone Christ Church, Westminster, England on 10 Sep 1837 of Millicent Mary daughter of William and Mary Sharp, abode Portland Town. William was an excavator. Born 21 May 1837.1
Another interesting aspect of the birth certificate is the location: Lenton. This fits with information from the later census but why were the family in Lenton, which is just to the west of Nottingham? Before and after this birth they were in Newark for extended periods.
Also, Henry’s name is simply Henry Alcock, with no mention of Richard. He was baptised Henry Richard and recorded as just Richard on Mary/Millicent’s death certificate. His occupation here is maltster which is consistent with other records.
Finally, it is curious that Millicent Mary’s surname is accidentally recorded as Sharp and corrected to Alcock. This could simply be a mistake on the registrar’s part or perhaps it indicates that she didn’t consider herself an Alcock any longer?
PEAK, EMMERY/AMORY
I spent some time browsing the online images of the Durham Diocese Bishop’s Transcripts from 1806-1818 for All Saints, Newcastle2. I found the marriage of John Peak and Ann Emmery in September 1801 but there was no additional information. I then looked for the burial of their son James Peak, born in 1806. I looked at every year up to the baptism of his namesake brother in 1817 but couldn’t find anything. There were no mentions of the surname Peak at all in that time frame. I wonder if they were moving around at that time. The timeline looks like this:
Sep 1801 – marriage at All Saints
Dec 1801 – birth of Jane
Sep 1802 – baptism of Jane at All Saints, he of Whitham on Trent, her father of Felton
Apr 1805 – birth of Ann
Jan 1806 – baptism of Ann at All Saints, he of Felton
Oct 1806 – birth of James
Apr 1808 – baptism of James at All Saints, he of Longframlington, her father of Felton
Aug 1809 – birth of Mary
Apr 1810 – baptism of Mary at All Saints, he of Twickenham, her father of Felton
Mar 1815 – baptism of John at All Saints, living at Blyth’s Nook
Dec 1817 – baptism of James at All Saints, living at Blyth’s Nook
It seems that All Saints is where they would baptise their children but they lived out of the city until around 1815. Felton is 20 miles north of Newcastle, Longframlington is a couple of miles west of Felton. I can’t find a place called Twickenham.
The images for the parish of Felton 1765-1843 are also available so I’ll look for the burial there as well as Mary Emmery’s baptism3
I searched baptisms, marriages and burials from 1765 to 1788. I found her baptism quite quickly. However marriages between 1766 and 1773 appear to be missing.
Baptism at Felton, Northumberland on 2 Oct 1774 of Ann, daughter of William Amory, Felton.4
And some siblings:

I also found:

I skipped forward to the 1800s to find James Peak’s burial, starting in 1801 and scanning through to 1819:
Burial at Felton, Northumberland on 22 Nov 1801 of Jane Carr of Felton, wife of Tobias Carr, labourer. Died 20 Nov. Age 38 years. 18

Burial at Felton, Northumberland on 8 Aug 1817 of John Carr, pauper. Abode Helm, Age 49 years. 28
There were no mentions of Peak at all in Felton. And very few mentions of Amory/Emmery. There was at least one extended family of Carrs.
The William Amory burial above could be Ann’s father. He would have been born in 1737 which would have made him 37 when she was born. That seems old, especially since I haven’t found any earlier births. It also makes him slightly too young to be her grandfather.
It does tie in with John and Ann’s move to Newcastle around that time. They could have been living with her father until he died.
Later I returned to looking at trade directories for mentions of John and Jane Peak in the 1850’s and 60’s when they may have been running an inn or eating house.

I then spent some time trying to sort out the newspaper references I have found for the Peaks. There are several mentions of John Peake, master mariner and shipowner. According to the Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury of 24 September 1859 he committed suicide41 and the Newcastle Daily Chronicle of 23 September 185942 reported his age as 44, making him born in 1815 which is annoyingly the same year as my ancestor John Peak. However the mariner does seem to consistently spell his name as Peake.
In the Newcastle Courant, Friday 09 December 1853, is a mention of a John Peake, publican, who was giving evidence in a vote bribery commission:
THE TYNEMOUTH BRIBERY COMMISSION.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6.
James Summers, on being recalled, stated, among other things, that that morning he had been asked by Mr Hadaway, one of Grey’s committee, to retract what he had stated before the commission on the preceding day, with respect to his being authorised to act in the way he had done at the election, but he had declined to do so. He had made efforts to induce voters who had promised Taylor to break their promise and vote for Grey. Two publicans named Caslaw and John Peake told him that Mr Rippon, a magistrate, and a member of Taylor’s committee, threatened to prevent a renewal of their licenses if they did not vote for Taylor. What he (witness) did was according to the direction of Grey’s committee.
Mr Rippon recalled, denied tho truth of the witness’s statement.
John Peake, publican, said that last year he was a tenant to Allison. He owed him a half-year’s rent at the time of the election. It was due in August 1852. (The receipts noticed in the examination of Summers were handed to witness.) He said that he received the receipts from Summers, and at that time he wanted £1 10s of Summers. He got an order from Summers for £1 10s, and that was the sum he owed him. There was also £11 owing to him. One receipt was dated July 9th, for half-year’s rent; the other receipt was the same date for £5 on account; and, in both cases he paid no money. It was on the day of the polling he got the receipts. He could not tell for what these receipts were given, but he thought they were partly given as a bribe for his vote. With respect to the evidence of Summers, respecting Mr Rippon, he distinctly denied that Mr Rippon ever threatened to do anything of the sort named by Summers : and he never mentioned such a thing to Summers.
James Summers recalled - He gave Peake othing in the shape of refreshment orders but onece, viz., for £1 10s, the other sums were given as he stated: and with regard to what Peake said about Mr Rippon was true, and he reiterated the statement.43
In the North & South Shields Gazette and Northumberland and Durham Advertiser of Friday 20 July 1855 is a mention of Thomas Peak:
Police Intelligence
NORTH SHIELDS
Monday, July 16
Before the Mayor, J. Coppin, J. Dake, T. Barker and S. Mease, Esqrs
Thomas Peak was charged with having assaulted John Kendal. It appeared that the defendant was courting the complainant’s sister, but previous to paying visit on Sunday evening, he had got himself intoxicated, and in this state bad gone to Kendal’s house, and create a disturbance, and assaulted the complainant with a poker. Peak had also struck Kendal’s father with the poker. Defendant expressed regret for what had occurred, and said that he was mad drunk at the time, or he would not have conducted himself in such violent and disgraceful manner. He was fined 10s and costs.43
John and Jane’s son Thomas married Mary Kendal the next year so this is certainly referring to him.
In the North & South Shields Gazette and Northumberland and Durham Advertiser of Friday 02 January 1852 we find a young John Peak getting into trouble for letting off squibs:
Monday, Dec 29 John Peak, a boy, was charged with letting off squibs in Bethel Chapel-lane, as the people were going to chapel; a number of respectable females had been put in considerable danger of having their dresses set on fire by the squibs let off by a number of blackguard boys, of which prisoner was the leader. He was committed to the House of Correction for 7 days.
In the Morpeth Herald, of Saturday 23 October 1858, is a report of a Jane Peak being imprisoned for running a disorderly house:
NORTHUMBERLAND MICHAELMAS SESSIONS
ALNWICK, Oct 21
JANE PEAK was indicted for keeping a disorderly house at North Shields. Mr BLACKWELL prosecuted, and the prisoner was undefended. The prisoner keeps a house in Dockwray-square, which is the common rendezvous of thieves, prostitutes, and other disreputable characters, and was described as having for a length of time been a complete nuisance to the neighbourhood. The evidence fully corroborated that description. Guilty. Sentenced to six calendar months in Morpeth Gaol, with hard labour.44
The previous month she had been fined 5s for the same offence. This from thr Shields Daily Gazette, Thursday 23 September 1858:
Jane Peak, eating house keeper, Dotwick street, was fined 5s and costs for permitting disorderly females to assemble in her house.45
