Today we want to confirm Kitty Whitehead’s given name. Was it Catherine or Caroline?

- 1857 – Banns read as CATHERINE Whitehead
- 1858 – Married George Tew as CAROLINE Whitehead
- 1861 – In census as KITTY Tew
- 1871 – Census as KITTY Tew
- 1879 – Baptism of daughter Annie Louisa as KITTY Tew
- 1881 – In census as KATE Tew
- 1891 – In census as KATE Tew
- 1901 – In census as KATE Tew
- 1911 – In census as KATE Tew
- 1917 – Death registration as KATE Tew
The marriage certificate is the only place where her name is not Catherine or a shortened form of it. The original does read as Caroline but none of the people involved could write their own names so it is possibly a transcription error on the part of the registrar. We would need to find the original parish register entry to check. They married at the parish church in Shalstone. The registers are available at Buckingham Record Office.
