Today I received the death certificate of John Dineen whose birth certificate I received yesterday. He was just 7 days old when he died:
Death at the Town of Caerleon, Newport on 6 April 1849, John Deneen, male, age 7 days, son of Daniel Deneen a labourer. Cause of death was premature birth, not certified. The informant was Timothy Collins in attendance, Caerleon. He could not sign his name. The death was registered on the 5 April 1850.
The late registration is surprising but parents were not legally obliged to inform the registrar until 1875. In the early days it was up to the local registrar to find out what births had taken place. The registrar for both John’s birth and death was B. Samuel.
