Today we received a copy of Bertie Herbert Tew’s marriage certificate. We already had these details but they fill a gap in our records:
Marriage at St. James Church, St. James, Northampton on 5 Aug 1935 between Bertie Herbert Tew, 26, Bachelor, Builder’s Labourer of 53 S[eart]well Street and Beatrice Mabel Rogers, 26, Spinster, Shoe Machinist of 65 Stanley Road. Bertie stated his father was George Tew (deceased), a general labourer, Beatrice’s father is recorded as Amos Rogers, a baker. The witnesses were A Rogers and Geo Jenning. All parties could sign their names.
It’s interesting that Bertie stated his father was George Tew. Is this a hint toward George Lay being his father or is he simply saving the embarrassment of declaring his illegitimacy?
Bertie’s address could be Scarletwell Street which is north of the town centre, off St. Andrew’s Road.
