The Kent parish records CD arrived today. I checked the marriage of William Hinksman and Jane Fisher and found the names of the witnesses:

Marriage at Cheriton, St. Martin, Kent on 30 Sep 1803, William Hinksman, bachelor of Cheriton to Jane Fisher, spinster of Cheriton. The witnesses were Isaac Munger and Mary Munger.

Sadly their ages or occupations are not given. Other marriages for later years in the index include that information. Also in some cases marriages give the abode as Shorncliffe Camp but I think those are limited to post 1914 entries.

There are no other appearances of the names Hinksman or Munger in the baptism, marriage or burial indexes. The name Fisher does not appear in the registers until the 1880s so it seems that Jane Fisher was not local to Cheriton (I haven’t checked the other parishes). There is only one other contemporary mention of a Fisher:

Baptism at Cheriton, St. Martin, Kent on 28 Mar 1814, Anabella dau. of John and Anabella Fisher. Abode Shorncliffe Barracks, he was a soldier.

This is probably just a coincidence.

Neighbouring parishes are Newington next Hythe, Saltwood, Hythe, Sandgate, Folkestone (St. Mary and St. Eanswythe). The Newington and Saltwood indexes were on the same CD so I checked those and there was no mention of Hinksman at all. There were some Fishers being baptised in Saltwood around this time but non appeared to match Jane.

I think I need a full history of movements of each battalion of the 4th regiment to determine where William could have met Jane Fisher.
