I found a burial of a Jane Hinksman in Portsmouth, 1812
Burial at Portsmouth, St Thomas on 10 Aug 1812, Jane Hinksman1
There is no other information. This could be William’s wife, Jane Fisher. However in 1812 William’s regiment was engaging the French in Portugal near Salamanca, then moved onto Madrid before returning to Portugal. The 1st battalion did not depart from Portsmouth for that campaign.
Perhaps Jane was ill and returned to England and died on the journey, to be buried at portsmouth. Perhaps also her children Jane and Maria were then sent to relatives of Jane Fisher in Beccles. Maybe they are the William and Margaret Fisher mentioned as witnesses on Jane’s marriage to William Rouse?
I looked for them in the 1841 census (they were witnesses to Jane’s marriage in 1839) and found a good candidate living in Cratfield2
| Name | Age | Occupation | Born in county? |
|---|---|---|---|
| William Fisher | 57 | Farmer | Y |
| Margarett Fisher | 52 | Y | |
| William Fisher | 33 | Y | |
| Mary Ann Fisher | 18 | Y |
I think William and Mary Ann were husband and wife because I found a couple with a similar age gap in the 1851 census, living in Walton3. He was born in Woodbridge
| Address | Name | Relation | Condition | Age | Occupation | Birth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upper Street | William Fisher | Head | M | 38 | Cabinet maker & Joiner | Suffolk, Woodbridge |
| Mary A Fisher | Wife | M | 29 | Suffolk, Ipswich | ||
| William Fisher | Son | 9 | Scholar | Suffolk, Woodbridge | ||
| Harriet Fisher | Dau | 3 mo | Suffolk, Walton |
It’s difficult to connect these fishers to Jane Fisher since she married William Hinksman in Cheriton, Kent. There is a possibility that she was actually the daughter of another soldier travelling with the 4th regiment and that she was actually from a Suffolk branch of Fishers.
There are several mentions of a William Fisher in the 4th regiment in the British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists 1812-1817 on Ancestry’s website. One entry has two different William Fishers on the same page.
I received the Hampshire Baptism, Marriage and Burial Indexes I ordered a few days ago. I wanted to find whether the Edward and Mary Hinksman who had a son William in Twyford were in some way related to the Edward and Jane Hinksman, parents of Edward, also in Twyford.
I found these marriages between 1754 and 1812:
- 26 Dec 1774, Avington, Edward Hinksman and Mary Bayley
- 13 Apr 1787, Hound, George Hinksman and Mary Culley
- 24 Dec 1761, Romsey, James Hinksman and Sarah Withers
- 01 Dec 1783, Romsey, James Hinksman and Elizabeth Hiscock
- 14 Nov 1779, Crondall, Thomas Hinksman and Elizabeth Moody
- 1 Jun 1801, Winchester St, Michael, Joseph Wells and Elixabeth Hinksman or Hinxman
- 20 Nov 1793, Bishopstoke, James Isaac and Jane Hinksman
- 13 Feb 1797, Southampton St Michael, William Magan and Martha Hinksman
- 05 Oct 1783, Romsey, Abraham Hobbs and Mary Hinksman
- 18 May 1800, Basingstoke, Charles Chapman and Sarah Hinksman
plus Hinxmans:
- 14 Apr 1757, Leckford, Jacob Hinxman and Ann Wickham
- 05 Aug 1780, Titchfield, John Hinxman and Fanny Marner
- 24 Jul 1757, Sparsholt, Joseph (w) Hinxman and Mary (w) Hall
- 07 Apr 1757, Gosport, Thomas Hinxman and Mary Sparshott
- 10 Jun 1773, Micheldever, William Hinxman and Mary Neale
- 30 Oct 1794, Micheldever, Henry Billett and Amy Hinxman
- 01 Jun 1756, Bishops Waltham, William Steel and Ann Hinxman
- 22 Aug 1775, Kingsclere, Thomas Hall and Ann Hinxman
- 26 Nov 1778, Titchfield, George Danford and Ann Hinxman
- 16 Nov 1761, Barton Stacey, George Brown and Elizabeth Hinxman
- 00 Jul 1789, Barton Stacey, Henry Allen and Elizabeth Hinxman
- 01 Jun 1801, Winchester St Michael, Joseph Wells and Elizabeth Hinxman or Hinksman
- 04 Apr 1812, Titchfield, Benjamin Goodeve and Elizabeth Hinxman
- 19 Apr 1808, Twyford, John Hawkins and Emma Hinxman
- 24 Oct 1807, Twyford, Thomas Clift and Juliet Caroline Hinxman
- 18 Jul 1802, Twyford, Charles Neeton and Maria Hinxman
- 30 May 1784, Winchester St Thomas, George Baverstock and Sarah Hinxman
- 05 Feb 1807, Titchfield, Samuel Milward and Sarah Hinxman
So, there is no Edward and Jane in the index, just Edward and Mary in Avington which is about 2 miles northeast of Winchester and 5 miles from Twyford.
